Dunwrights repairs and upgrades Mhouse, NICE Home and other DIY gate motor kits across Darwin, Palmerston and the Rural area. Mhouse, now sold as NICE Home, is the DIY range from Nice. Like other gate kits sold through large hardware and online retailers such as Bunnings, it’s designed for budget-conscious owners who want to automate a gate themselves, with motor, control board, remotes and brackets all in one box.
For a lighter gate on a suburban block, a DIY kit can do the job. The challenges usually show up a few years later, after Darwin’s heat, humidity and storms have taken their toll. And when a DIY kit fails, there’s often no installer to call. Warranty claims usually go back through the place you bought it, parts may need to come from interstate, and meanwhile you’re opening the gate by hand in the rain.
That’s where we come in. We’ll look at your kit, work out what’s gone wrong, and give you a straight answer on whether it’s worth repairing, even if you installed it yourself.

What we see with DIY kits in the Top End
Parts aren’t stocked locally. Most Darwin suppliers don’t carry parts for DIY kits. They’re usually ordered from down south when needed, so your gate can be out of action while you wait.
Parts cost a lot relative to the kit. A replacement control board can cost a large share of what the whole kit cost new. That changes the repair-or-replace sum quickly.
Kits used on heavier gates. Each kit is rated for a maximum gate weight and length. Fitted to a heavy steel gate, the motor works harder and wears out sooner.
Heat and humidity. Like any gate motor, DIY kits are exposed to Darwin’s heat, humidity and storms. Batteries and control boards take the brunt.
