Sliding or swing, solar or 240V: what suits your property
Choosing a gate motor comes down to a few big questions. What type of gate do you have, or want? How will you power it? And how much do you want the system to do? Get these right and your gate will serve you well for years. Get them wrong and you’ll be pushing it open by hand in the rain.
This guide covers the main choices for Darwin, Palmerston and the Rural area. It’s based on what we see every day installing and repairing gate motors in Territory conditions.

Sliding or Swing?
Sliding gates run along a track beside the fence, so they don’t need clear space in front of the gate. They suit sloping driveways, tight frontages and properties close to the road. There’s one gate and one motor, which keeps things simple.
Swing gates open inward or outward, so they need clear, level space in front of the gate. Double swing gates need two motors with cabling between them, and more material to fabricate. They can suit properties with plenty of room, or owners who want to keep existing swing gates.
Your existing gate matters. Automating the gate you already have is usually the most cost-effective option. Converting from swing to sliding can mean clearing and concreting work, which adds up quickly.
Solar or 240V?
240V (mains power) suits properties with power already near the gate. It’s reliable day to day. The downside in Darwin is storms: power outages stop the gate unless you have battery backup, and surges can damage the control board unless you have surge protection. We fit both on mains installs.
Solar needs no mains power at the gate, so it’s ideal for rural blocks and long driveways. Because it runs from its own batteries, it keeps working through power outages. The key is sizing. Undersized panels and batteries go flat after a few cloudy days in the Wet. We size our solar systems to keep running through monsoon weather.
Solar also scales further than many people expect. We’ve set up solar gates running 160 remotes on busy shared driveways.
Is the motor big enough for the gate?
This is one of the most common problems we see. A motor rated for a light gate is fitted to a heavy one. It works well at first, then wears out early. Every motor has a weight and length rating, and on swing gates, wind load matters too. We size every motor to the gate it’s driving.
Simple or smart?
Some gate motors are packed with electronics and features. They can be impressive, but in Darwin’s heat and humidity, more electronics means more to go wrong, and the parts are often expensive.
We prefer simple. A reliable motor that opens and closes the gate every time, with affordable local parts. Extras like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and intercoms can be added when you want them, without the core system depending on them.
How far will my remote reach?
A standard receiver typically reaches around 60 metres. Trees, buildings and distance all reduce that. An extended antenna with a clear line of sight can reach much further. If your house is a long way from the gate, an intercom may be the better option.
