Check the bank and plan that reno now while the NT Government is offering to help fund your job dollar-for-dollar in its NT Home Improvement Scheme
The NT Home Improvement Scheme has been re-jigged, re-aligned and re-designed by the Northern Territory Government for home owners and occupiers in Darwin and the NT and this is our guide to help you understand how you can claim your cash while getting quality work done.
The first thing to understand is this is not a straight out grant. For every dollar you spend on your reno, the NT Home Improvement Scheme will match with a dollar, up to a maximum of $4,000 excluding GST.
So our advice is to draw up a list of all the important jobs you’ve wanted to get done around the house and get them done now, while the government is willing to go halves with you.
Remember, you only get one voucher and the government has a limited pool of money, so fortune will favour the fastest NT Home Improvement Scheme applicants!
The NT Home Improvement Scheme process in simple steps
Firstly, choose a quality, local tradie like Dunwrights Air and Electrical and ask us to quote on jobs that qualify as ‘minor improvements, repairs and upgrades’, such as fixing or replacing air conditioning, meter boxes and safety switches, water heaters, electric gates, roller doors, renovations – you name it!
Armed with a quote, you can then apply for a voucher from the government. You’ll need the quote and some proof that you’re the owner-occupier, such as a utilities bill.
Your voucher will cover about half the cost of the job, up to a maximum of $4,000 excluding GST.
Next, with your NT Home Improvement Scheme application approved, you give us the green light to get going and get your job done. It’s tough times ahead in the territory so get in quick before the cash runs out. For frequently asked questions don’t wait!
And finally, when the job is over, you pay us for our work; partly with the NT Home Improvement Scheme voucher and partly with your own money. Please note – quoted works can not be deviated from in any way without NT Government approval – so any extras you might need, think about them first!

A perfect time to make your home safer and more valuable
This NT Home Improvement Scheme is to help stimulate the trade industry and support Northern Territory local small businesses. With the mining highs and lows and the bleak future on the horizon for Darwin as a whole, stimulating business as a whole is a great way to get our local economy back up and firing again.
We all win from this and we urge you to apply for a voucher, even if it is for a smaller project – %50 off on ANYTHING is a ripper deal!
We work hard to apply professional standards in everything we do in our ongoing battle against cowboys and backyarders, and the NT Home Improvement Scheme is a positive sign from the government that a robust trade sector is important.
So let’s make it time to get that dodgy air con replaced, that new Roller Door and see to that electrical work you’ve been putting off, thanks to the Northern Territory Government’s $2,000 vouchers available for Territorians doing home renovations. Hell, even have a think about opening that gate every day before work during next wet season and how easy it would be at the click of a button?!
Voucher applications have opened and you can follow this link to the NT Home Improvement Scheme if you are a Territory homeowner-occupier to apply to receive your voucher towards minor improvements, repairs and upgrades to your home.
You must own a home in the Northern Territory and occupy that home to participate.
