The Pre Purchase Electrical Inspection – That Wasn’t
This week whilst out on a job in Darwin one of our electrical service techs was in the process of installing a new retrofit switchboard and a few other bits and pieces for a client. Clients had just bought the home without a pre purchase
electrical inspection – and had experienced a couple of odd occasional malfunction previously that they wanted checked. During the job it was noted that a few things were not really installed in a tradesman like manner. Read on.
To understand the quality of the previous work, the rangehood had a backwards wired 3 pin plug top going to it. As well as an airconditioner for the lounge that was linked to the bedroom airconditioner with cabling that was also backwards with inadequate circuit protection (no warranty on the same circuit) amongst a few other things that were repaired at the time.
However, when all was complete, it was noted after considerable testing that a cable to a light had been damaged some time in the past and the previous owner/electrician had decided to just swap the cables over so the fitting would work….which it did with the old fuses.
Did it work ? Yes, but not in a safe manner – because the previous owner had removed the earth from the light and used that for something else. In-fact just touching a fan in another room ended up with a tingle…. But back to earthing.
For those at the back – if there was a fault with that fitting at any time in the future, and you or your family were having a bath for example, it could be a shocking experience to say the least. At this property the fans, taps, sink and anything earthed was found to have different levels of electricity flowing through them. Most of it only low readings, however in one section we found 80Volts, enough to jump start you before work.
